Tokyo is too hot, so what should we do?

I thought it would be fun to start this series since we have a trip planned for the summer leading into fall with our little one-year-old. Tokyo can get pretty hot, so we're excited to explore some cooler spots to relax and enjoy downtime without melting in the heat.

Kicking things off is our thrilling escape to Karuizawa. It's not our first visit, but it always leaves us in awe!

Ready? Let’s go to Karuizawa!

Oh, what a week it was! We ditched Tokyo's sweltering summer and found bliss at Hotel Indigo Karuizawa. The moment we stepped into the lobby, we were spellbound by its chic, modern design that harmonized perfectly with the stunning alpine forests outside. The cozy vibe, highlighted by a central fireplace radiating a warm, inviting glow, whisked us away to a world of pure tranquility and relaxation.

Karuizawa: Where Nature Meets Culture

Where is Karuizawa?

Just 70 km (a breezy 1.5 to 2-hour journey) southeast of Nagano and 170 km (a scenic 2.5-hour drive) northwest of Tokyo, this charming town is a must-see! Hop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, and you'll be at Karuizawa Station in no time—just 30 minutes from Nagano or a swift 65 to 75 minutes from Tokyo. Sitting at an elevation of around 1,000 meters, this alpine paradise offers a refreshing escape from the sweltering summer heat and humidity. It's no wonder it's a favorite retreat for Tokyoites looking for a holiday or a quick day trip! The town has top-notch hotels and guesthouses, delightful restaurants and cafes, fantastic shopping, and captivating museums and galleries. It's just a stone's throw from the breathtaking Joshinetsu Kogen National Park and the renowned hot spring haven, Kusatsu Onsen.

Karuizawa boasts a refreshing alpine climate that contrasts beautifully with the bustling city. But there's more to this town than just cooler temperatures. It's a place to immerse yourself in nature's wonders, savor culinary delights, and uncover historical treasures.
