Dear fellow wanderers,

Japan's railways offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience the country's diverse landscapes, culinary traditions, and rich cultural heritage. Forget the whirlwind pace of the bullet train; these unique rail journeys invite you to slow down, savor every moment, and discover the hidden gems that lie off the beaten path. Whether you're a foodie, a nature enthusiast, a luxury traveler, or simply seeking a unique adventure, a train journey in Japan is perfect for you. Let's delve into three extraordinary rail experiences that will leave a lasting impression:

1. The Local Choice: Resort Shirakami - A Tapestry of Natural Beauty and Cultural Immersion

Nestled in the northern Tohoku region, the Resort Shirakami weaves along the scenic Gono Line, a coastal route that unveils the region's breathtaking natural beauty. Imagine yourself gazing out of the train's large windows, your eyes feasting on the shimmering Sea of Japan, lush apple orchards, hidden surfing bays, and the majestic silhouette of Mount Iwaki.

This Joyful Train isn't just about the stunning scenery; it's an immersion into the heart of Tohoku's culture. As you journey through charming coastal towns, you'll be serenaded by traditional shamisen performances, captivated by storytelling in the local Tsugaru dialect, and entertained by playful puppet shows.

Hop off at various stations along the route to explore hidden gems. Witness the ethereal beauty of Aoike, a blue pond nestled in a beech forest. Thanks to the minerals dissolved within, its waters shimmer with an otherworldly blue hue. Take a leisurely walk through the surrounding forest, breathe in the fresh air, and let the tranquility of nature wash over you.

Continue your journey to JR WeSpa Tsubakiyama Station, where a short shuttle ride will transport you to Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen. This open-air hot spring, perched on the seashore, offers panoramic views of the vast ocean. Legend has it that the waters here possess rejuvenating properties, promising a refreshing and revitalizing soak.

For a taste of local life and culinary delights, disembark at Hirosaki Station. This charming city is renowned for its apple orchards, where you can try your hand at apple-picking in the fall. Indulge in freshly baked apple pies year-round, and explore Hirosaki Castle Park, a haven of cherry blossoms in spring and enchanting illuminations in winter.

Along the journey, the Resort Shirakami train stops at stations where passengers can participate in special activities. At Noshiro Station, you can play basketball and buy cedar wood crafts. At Senjojiki Station, you can take a short walk to the sea. Onboard, you might enjoy a traditional shamisen performance or other entertainment depending on the train service. The three Resort Shirakami trains are named after the natural wonders found in the Shirakami-Sanchi area, through which the train line passes.

The Resort Shirakami trains wind through the scenic Shirakami-Sanchi UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to ancient beech forests, unique wildlife, and picturesque lakes. Each of the three trains is named after elements found in this natural landscape.

The Buna, meaning "beech tree," is the newest and most eco-friendly train, with a hybrid engine and a green exterior reflecting its connection to nature. Inside, warm colors and locally sourced wood create a welcoming atmosphere. Passengers can enjoy snacks and drinks from the self-service shop or relax in the window-facing bar seats while taking in the coastal views. The Buna also offers free Wi-Fi, making it a great choice for travelers who want to stay connected while enjoying the scenery. If you only have the chance to ride one Resort Shirakami train, the Buna is highly recommended.

by JR East

The Resort Shirakami offers a unique train journey through beautiful scenery, complemented by local food and fun activities. It runs daily between JR Shin-Aomori and JR Akita, accessible via bullet train from Tokyo. All seats require reservations, which can be made online up to a month in advance.

If you plan to explore the Tohoku region, consider the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area), offering unlimited travel on JR East lines (including bullet trains) for 5 days at a lower cost than round-trip tickets between Tokyo and either Aomori or Akita. The pass also covers rides on the Resort Shirakami and other Joyful Trains, and can be used by foreign passport holders living in Japan.

The warmth and hospitality of the Japanese countryside are evident in every gesture, creating a truly memorable trip. Before departing Hachinohe, the staff even holds a banner to wish passengers a pleasant journey.

The TOHOKU EMOTION is made up of three cars: an open-dining car resembling a restaurant, a private compartment car where you can have more privacy for your group, and a live kitchen car.
